Swine

Written on August 30, 2009

There’s no shortage of insecurity and inti-intellectualism in the roleplaying world, but this guy has to be the king:

The Swine are any people for whom RPGs have, as their primary purpose, the conveyance of some kind of sense of personal self-worth. This need for gaining self-esteem out of RPGs manifests itself in creating and aggresively promoting the concept that RPGs are either “art” or “intellectual pursuit” rather than a mere game, and usually implying that someone who participates (to them it would not just be “playing”) in an RPG is doing something of inherent value with their lives. In order to create this illusion, the value of “art” or “intellectual” has to totally superimpose itself over “fun” and “play”.

This stuff is from a forum called theRPGSite, written by administrator RPGPundit. According to his blog bio, he’s an Uruguayan gamer from Montevideo. His major idea is the introduction of the term “Swine” to describe people who disagree with him. He takes his Swine seriously: the above quote is from a forum thread called “Once More, defining ‘Swine’”, and his blog tagline is “Guarding the Frontier Against the Swine”.

The Swine are an insidious bunch:

Likewise, and here’s the insidious part, in order for the Swine to be able to gain this sense of self-worth from what any sane person would consider a meaningless game (meaningless good fun, but still utterly meaningless and certainly not self-validating) the Swine must attempt to utterly destroy the concept that RPGs should be played for fun as a mere game, and must promote the concept that they (the Swine) are the special elite who truly understand RPGs, and actively work against the popularity of RPGs.
So the Swine have it as part of their make-up, conscious of the fact or not, the destruction of the RPG industry, and indeed of the hobby as a hobby or as play. All this for their own selfish, low, contemptible ends.

The Swine play games that are more fancy than D&D and pretend to enjoy them. This is, of course, impossible, and means only that the Swine are liars. Later in the same thread:

In any case, I’m not really saying that the Fun itself is pointless; the part to focus on is the fact that the Swine DONT HAVE FUN with the game. Their “Fun” is derived from prancing about pretending to be intellectuals.

I’m saying THEIR fun has no meaning, because of the pretense of meaning that they’re trying to apply to it, which ruins the real point of playing RPGs.

It says something about this guy that in his world, the home of roleplaying elitism is rpg.net.

It is kind of funny that this guy accuses his Swine of being out to destroy his style of gaming, while at the same time he himself devotes a lot of time and energy into denying the very meaning of what others consider interesting and fun.

Henceforth, people who disagree with my style of gaming shall be known as the Stupids. I expect this to become part of the global gaming lexicon.

I think Swine is his tribute Hunter S. Thompson.

I have often heard people in our finnish scene implying that provocation for provocation’s sake would be somehow inherently good thing, I personally like to wave RPGpundit at their face.

Why do all kinds of twits think they have a soulmate in Hunter S. Thompson?

Thompsons style is in it’s distinctiveness easy enough to imitate, as in everyone recognizes who you are trying to act like, but packing enough substance is of course completely different matter.
Thompson is also somewhat an idol amongst libertarians, the sort of opioned induvidualist many in that particular political movement aspire to be.

I, as a heartfelt Swine, predict that any Stupid who is outspoken enough about his opinions (such as RPGpundit), will become Swine in three steps:

    1. Speak about his opinions vaguely but with great enthusiasm.
    2. Eventually succumb to defining what he thinks roleplaying is.
    3. Be attacked by other Stupids (or even Swine) who disagree with his definition, because it’s an elitistic definition that is trying to prevent the other Stupids from playing the way they want.

Ah, you’ve found The Pundit, the mad hermit of the internet! He is to roleplaying games what Lord Selibacy is to relationships, and read mostly for the comedy value. He does occasionally hit upon the truth when discussing the industry, but most of the time can’t see past his own ego, which I believe blots out the sun in large parts of South America.

The discussions in the comments are also occasionally interesting, since his moderately high profile in the RPG blogosphere lures in some industry names like Ryan Dancey.
