Holy Fox: Characters

Choose one of the characters below. Before the game, find a picture that represents the character. Don’t worry if it’s a recognizable actor or a movie character. The fox is all about fleeting associations of glamour.

The Pretty Boy

You’re a mid-twenties man with too much street cred to be a hipster and too pretty a face to work for a living. You dabble in whatever you need to be in the moment. Maybe you’re a DJ, or a drug dealer, or an escort, or maybe you prefer people to make a guess.

You live a nomadic existence on the international party circuit, from Ibiza to Goa to Miami. You know a lot of trust fund kids, celebrities and party organizers. You like sound music and the ecstasy of crowds pumped up on sex, drugs and a bassline. You make people turn themselves inside out in their desire to be with you.

Your name can be Aidan or Octavian. Or maybe Zahir.

Your special power is to subtly appear more like the thing the person you’re talking to most desires.

The Beguiling Mystery

You’re a mid-twenties woman at home in cocktail parties, private clubs, exclusive resorts and show business events. You never pay your own drinks, or clothes, or hotel rooms, or plane tickets, or in fact much of anything. You always tip generously with money from people who can afford it.

Others think you’re an actress, the secret lover of a movie producer, or the daughter of someone who’s filthy rich. And perhaps you are some of these things, or none of them. You travel around the world from one exclusive social milieu to the next, always leaving before the people around you really find out who you are. You make people give away everything they have.

Your name can be Violetta or Indigo, Ciara or maybe just Hope.

Your special power is to create an aching need to find more about you.

The Illusionary Man

You’re an older gentleman of distinction and class. Or at least, that’s the impression you cultivate. In reality, you live in a succession of hotel rooms and the residences of people who are taken with you. You sound like you have great ideas, proposals worth considering, partnerships that will make everyone big. You create an illusion of erudition and worth, while actually you barely have the clothes on your back.

You can be found at resorts reading a newspaper in a cafe, on the racetrack giving tips, or in aristocratic family gatherings where nobody can quite remember who’s relative you are. When people annoy you, you fool them into wrecking their lives.

Your name can be Bramwell, Desmond or Bernard. Or Clifford.

Your special power is to sound so reasonable, people around you suppress their critical faculties.

The Deviant Madam

You’re a middle-aged lady of distinction and charm. Something in your character makes you stand out in any crowd, drawing attention and inspiring dreams that make people question who they really are. You like to play with people, making them do amusing things to themselves and each other.

You’re a power behind the throne, even if the people around you don’t quite know what your actual position is. You travel around the world with few possessions, moving from one lavish situation to the next, often in the contexts of aristocracy or the entertainment business.

Your name might be Alexandra, Claudia, Victoria or Lucia. If it’s fit for an Empress, it’s fit for you.

Your special power is to instill a desire to make you happy.

Common Characteristics

All foxes share some common characteristics.

You’re each other’s best friends and worst enemies. You’re loyal to other foxes, but you also want to do better than them. The spirit of competition is alive and well, although the rules change.

You’re bad liars and good hustlers. Charm is key, and you have it in plenty.

Live in the moment. You can fall in love tonight and disappear tomorrow.

Luxury is a beautiful thing. You have few possessions, but you burn through fur coats (as long as it’s not fox), caviar and foie gras like no tomorrow.

Your morality is sentimental. If a pretty little thing is in trouble, you must help him or her. But if someone needs to be destroyed, you won’t feel bad about it.

Holy Fox

Holy Fox is a one-shot tabletop game for 4-5 players.

Holy Fox is a game about foxes who hunt fox hunters. Holkham Hall, the family seat of the Earl of Leicester, will be the site of a game in which an old British fox hunting family will become the prey. The fox is equipped with the deadly tools of his trade: A faked party invitation, a killer outfit and a smile to die for.

Every player character is a fox in the shape of a human, sometimes working together and sometimes in competition to destroy this family of fox hunters in the most interesting way possible.

The Revenge of the Fox

Hunting the hunters has long been a tradition among the foxes, or at least for a few decades. History is unreliable among habitual liars and hustlers. Fox hunting, now illegal in the U.K. but still practiced, has long been an affront to the fox. Every year, one hunter is visited by the foxes. At the end of the visit: Bankruptcy, scandal, suicide.

Who Is the Fox?

The fox is a shapeshifter, a liar, a chameleon, a lover of luxury and all the best things in life, a creature loyal to her kind and relentless to her enemies. The fox is never the star, the leader, the center of attention. The fox is in the sidelines, among the bright and the beautiful but never truly one of them. The fox is at every exclusive party, but you’re never quite sure how she got there. The fox is the girl you know you shouldn’t flirt with, but can’t resist. The fox is the guy you know to be a liar, but believe anyway.

Style

Holy Fox is a social game, with a strong focus on character relationships and emergent play. It’s not a comedy game per se, but it can be funny. It can also be dark. It’s all about the revenge of the hunted.

The fox is not about killing, or being efficient. Rather, she’s all about style. How you do it is much more important than success. You start by getting to know the victims, becoming close with them, and then proceed from there.

The game is systemless, but the fox has some specific characteristics. She can get into any party, invited or not, and always has everything she needs to look good.

The Corpse Tenement

The Corpse Tenement

A roleplaying campaign of 5-10 sessions based on Planescape. 4-5 players. Played during 2017.

Concept

Planescape is a setting published for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition in the 90’s. In all its bizarre originality and philosophical vision, it’s the best thing published for any edition of D&D. I’ve wanted to make a game based on Planescape for a long time, but I believe the setting is ill-served by the mechanics and base assumptions of D&D. That’s why The Corpse Tenement builds on my interpretation of Planescape and will be largely systemless, based on a very specific scenario in the vast space of possibility that Planescape presents.

As a player, everything you need to know will be introduced when you need it. No prior knowledge of the setting is necessary.

Planescape is a fantasy setting set among the infinities of other planes of existence. At its center is Sigil, the City of Doors, a multicultural metropolis and meeting point famous for its multitude of portals that lead to all over existence. This is where The Corpse Tenement will largely be set. If you want to get a feeling of how Sigil works, imagine a Dickens novel seen through the prism of Hieronymus Bosch.

Brain rats infest many Sigil buildings. The more there are, the smarter they are.

Sigil has no government. Anyone attempting to subdue its anarchy will be destroyed by its protector and avatar, the Lady of Pain (seen in the picture at the top of this post). Sigil’s political space is occupied by factions promoting different ideologies and political ideas. They exist in a state of perpetual warfare while also taking care of the functions that a living city needs to have, as if all the ministries of a government we’re actively at each other’s throats with no central authority to keep them in check.

One of these factions is the Dustmen, who believe that the distinction between life and death is an illusion and that we’re all dead already. They operate the city Mortuary and are responsible for funerals and disposing of the dead. The player characters in The Corpse Tenement are members of the Dustmen, working for an organization somewhere between a union, a cult and an undertaker. The characters’ position in the faction is high enough that they can influence its direction and tactics.

The Dustmen are led by factol Skall, a lich and the only faction leader to also be a faction founder.

Other factions in Sigil are the Athar, atheists who deny the gods despite the fact that they very obviously exist, the Mercykillers who deliver punishment after a judgement from the Fraternity of Order and an arrest by the police forces of the Harmonium, and Transcendent Order who believe in the revelatory power of inner truth.

The focus of the game is on the ordinary and extraordinary experiences of the death business in a world of infinite wonder, relationships and the social life of the characters, and the opportunities one can find when something big happens. In the beginning of the game, we find the characters taking care of typical Dustmen business, but as the game goes on, larger events provide interesting goals and choices for both the characters and their faction.

A challenge traditionally presented by Planescape is that the setting is too overwhelming and confusing to grasp. Because of this, I’ll try to keep things resolutely anchored in human experience. Something huge might be happening in the background, but in The Corpse Tenement, the characters fall in love, worry about their families and come five minutes late to work in the morning the same as anyone else. Even if the work is at the Mortuary, the site of a portal to the death energies of the Negative Energy Plane.

(Planescape might be familiar as the setting of the videogame Planescape: Torment. Its starting scene happens in the Dustmen Mortuary.)

Sigil, a street view from a bad part of town.

Setting

The setting is in some ways very traditional fantasy. Swords and bows. Magic, elves and undead. Ordinary people and demigods. In the interpretation I’m working with, player characters are not heroes or super wizards. They have their capabilities, but they’re operating on a relatively human level. Their power comes from the Dustmen, backed by their essential role in running the city, the eldritch power of the faction’s liches and its army of former members kept as undead, waiting in the Fortress of the Soul.

Other beings, demons and angels, can be vastly more powerful on an individual level, but in Sigil they don’t have an organizational advantage, and any serious plays they might make are curtailed by the Lady of Pain. Thus, the characters might be on the human level, but they have things of their own that give them power.

The characters can be from Sigil or from somewhere else. Sigil is a place of immense disparities of wealth and standard of living. The poor live in desperate poverty and the rich in opulent comfort. The Dustmen are an egalitarian faction in the sense that its members are selected based on mystifying criteria only understood by the ancient death priests. The daughter of a ragpicker has an equal chance of being admitted as the son of a lord.

There are old Dustmen families, but the faction is not big on sex for the purpose of procreation and many of those born into the faction end up defecting. Thus, a second-generation Dustman is something of a curiosity.

In terms of promotion, the faction is partially meritocratic, partially just confusing. Sometimes you can get promoted because the death omens say so. In Sigil, the Dustmen are not a particularly high status faction and have no role among the glittering elites. However, they are relatively secure. A chaos-loving Xaositect is always in danger of being apprehended by a Harmonium patrol, but a Dustman can walk the streets in peace. Indeed, the faction has a mystical pact of peace with any undead  or gods of death they might encounter.

The peaks of Mount Celestia burn any normal visitors with their purity.

Sigil is a traveler’s dream, the center of the multiverse, the city in the crossroads. Dustmen business can take the characters to other planes, from the blinding holiness of Mount Celestia to the howling caverns of Pandemonium, but the focus of the game remains solidly with Sigil.

Character Creation

I’ll make templates that contain the features the characters need to have to function in the game. The players can choose between the templates and elaborate on them to create proper three dimensional characters. We’ll hold a character creation session before starting the game proper.

Kielet: Virallisesti ruotsinkielinen, äidinkielet suomi ja ruotsi, lisäksi hyvä englanti ja huono saksa

Ura:

Opiskelee Hankenissa markkinointia, gradua vaille valmis.

Aloitti yliopistopolitiikassa, on sittemmin siirtynyt kunnallispolitiikkaan. Istuu Helsingin kunnanvaltuustossa Kokoomuksen nuorimpana edustajana.

Töissä ajatushautomo Economic Freedom Finlandissa.

Harrastukset:

Ruokahifistely ja ruuanlaitto.

Ampuminen radalla.

Perheen yhtenäisyys on olennaista.

– Vapaa markkinatalous on itseohjautuva järjestelmä, jonka myötä toteutuu oikeudenmukaisin mahdollinen yhteiskunta.

– Puolueessa eikä työpaikalla ole minkäänlaista seksismiä tai muuta ikävää.

– Perheessä kaikilla on lopulta samat arvot.

– Suomi on sosiaalisesti liberaali talousoikeistolainen maa, joten tässä mielessä Cessi edustaa keskilinjaa.

– Hymyilemällä minkä tahansa ikäväksi menneen sosiaalisen tilanteen saa käännettyä takaisin raiteilleen.

– Suomi on kaksikielinen maa.

Silloin Cessi alkaa oireilla.

Vandalismi. Erityisesti paikoissa, joissa kukaan ei näe, kuten naisten vessoissa. Joskus emotionaalista purkautumista, joskus luovempaa.

Kännäys. Joskus tulee juotua liikaa, ja humalassa tekee typeriä asioita. Totuus on, että joskus ideana on juoda itsensä humalaan jotta voi tehdä kahdelta aamuyöllä jotain todella epäviisasta.

Maaniset vaiheet. Kaikki menee hyvin jos vain tekee tarpeeksi. Tällöin Cessi aloittaa uusia harrastuksia erityisesti liikunnan saralla, sisustaa yksiönsä uusiksi, tekee kaupunginvaltuustossa eeppisen joukon aloitteita ja lähettelee exille ja vanhoille panoille optimistisia viestejä, joissa ehdotetaan tapaamista.

Ajoittainen bulimia. Joskus paha olo tulee ulos suun kautta.
