Magnets are fun. The invisible fields of attraction and repulsion still feel as compelling as they did when I was a child playing around with them.

Kluster is a very simple dexterity game using a set of magnets and an orange rope. The rules are as follows:

  • The magnets are divided evenly among the players.
  • The players take turns placing magnets inside the circle formed by the orange rope.
  • If any magnets stick together as a result of your placing a magnet, you have to take all of them.
  • You are not allowed to move the magnets by touching them but you are allowed to push or pull the string into a new position or use the repulsive power of a magnet to move the others already placed.
  • The first to get rid of their magnets wins.

I found the game intuitive in that it made sense on the first try. It’s a game of skill because the better you understand the functioning of the magnet and what you can do with it, the easier it is to win. How you interact with the physical affordances of the components is key.
