Research Blog Antarctica #95 - Whiteout

February 11, 2010

Film: Dominic Sena: Whiteout (U.S.A. 2009)
Whiteout is an Antarctic crime movie based on the comic book by Greg Rucka. Its a faithful yet plodding adaptation, combining good Antarctic detail with a leaden script and workmanlike direction.
The story is about an U.S. Marshal posted to the American base at the South Pole. A man is discovered [...]

Advice for young journalists

October 22, 2009

I recently read the book Nuoren toimittajan eloonjäämisopas (The Young Journalists’ Survival Guide) by the journalists Anni Lintula and Meri Valkama. I was surprized how little it reflected my own experiences. It wasn’t too long ago when I was a young journalist too.
Many colleagues have commented that this is a book that makes even professional, [...]

Pyongyang Poster Art

July 10, 2009

At the Pyongyang Film Studios in North Korea they have permanent movie sets for a South Korean town of the Korean War era, a Japanese town, etc. The buildings feature posters representing the North Korean artists’ idea of what advertisements, shop signs and movie posters look like in the South.

Destruction Yoga

May 22, 2009

There’s a lot of strange stuff on Pirate Bay. This looks promising:
Yoga and Meditation: Pathway to Destruction - Documentary
Here’s the uploader’s explanation. I highlighted the best parts:
Yoga’s practice in everyday situations — is it dangerous? Eastern meditation and yoga are being used by vibrant young businessmen, athletes and children for achieving better, healthier living. How [...]

Punk is not sexual

April 30, 2009

I watched the Dennis Hopper movie Out of the Blue recently. The best part is this wonderful opening monologue where Linda Manz talks about punk.

The sequence is sampled in the Primal Scream song Kill All Hippies:

Antarctic Research Blog #88 - Under Antarctic Ice

February 18, 2009

Documentary: Norbert Wu: Under Antarctic Ice (U.S.A. 2001)
This is an hour-long documentary following the photographer Norbert Wu as he’s taking pictures for his book, also called Under Antarctic Ice. Content-wise this is a bit vacuous, but the images are perfect and gorgeous. Everything in the documentary is beautiful, from the impressive underwater splendor to the [...]

The Cat Came Back

I saw the animated short The Cat Came Back when I was maybe ten years old. I loved it. I used to go around singing the chorus “The cat came back, the cat came back”, over and over again.
Unlike many other things I have fond childhood memories of, this is exactly as good as I [...]

Organ Failure

January 10, 2009

I saw the movie Repo! The Genetic Opera yesterday, and I gotta say, if you like goth dystopia, organ failure and musicals this is the film for you. It features a bizarre cast, from Sarah Brightman to Paris Hilton, from Anthony Stewart Head of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy.

Antarctic Research Blog #84 - With Byrd at the South Pole

December 30, 2008

Documentary: With Byrd at the South Pole (U.S.A. 1930)
This is a documentary shot during Richard Byrd’s First Antarctic Expedition, 1928-1930. Of the early Antarctic documentaries, this has the best images in the sense that the cameramen were able to shoot more than before, although they were not as artistically accomplished as Frank Hurley or Herbert [...]

Antarctic Research Blog #82 - Retrograde

November 24, 2008

Film: Christopher Kulikowski: Retrograde (Luxembourg, Italy, U.K. U.S.A. 2004)
Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space is not the worst movie in the world. The worst movies are like this Dolph Lundgren late career vehicle, cheap, pointless and soulless things with no personality whatsoever.
Retrograde’s Antarctic elements are surprisingly accurate, but that’s a small consolation. The story [...]
